„Diet” – the taboo word of 2016

It seems that the trends do not reflect only the fashion world but also when it comes to a lifestyle. Increasingly we have gotten more familiar and we have become more attracted to the „Bio” labels on the supermarkets shelves.  We focused our attention from the number of calories to the list of nutritional values. Be it fashion or awareness?

The editors from Glamour magazine wrote last month an article well documented about all this hysteria about diets and I could not agree more with their point of view. While reading the article „Good-bye, diet!”, the inspiration hit me and I decided to write something about this topic. The truth is that more and more women have shifted away from drastic diets because of the desire to lose some extra pounds and turned to a balanced eating plan that give long-term results. But here arise two concepts that contradict each other: diet and healthy lifestyle. The word starting with “D” refers to a drastic and sudden change in order to lose weight as fast as possible. But a healthy lifestyle is meant to be part of our everyday life, ensuring wellbeing, health, balance between body and mind. Of course you can lose 4 pounds in 3 days by a poor diet, just because your body is exposed to a shock and enters into a state of crisis. Hence, it comes the “tragedy” to gain again all the lost pounds after interrupting the diet.

Maybe you will be surprised to know, but almost 80% of how we look is reflected by our eating habbits, 10% is genetics and the rest of 10% is working out. So, in that case we cannot spend 2h at the gym and then go home and stuff ourselves with chocolate and soda. That being said, there is one thing for us to do: to eat clean. The proper formula for eating clean would be given by “whole” foods like cereals, good meat (it depens, given the fact that there are vegetarians among us), fresh veggies and fruits, walnuts, nuts etc.

The word „diet” should make us think of food in general, not misleading connotations such as „starvation”, „restrictions” or „torture”. I strongly believe that a diet which is associated with the last three connotations should not be ever followed. First of all, besides the fact that it puts your body to a series of drastic and unsure changes, a diet does nothing but frustrate you. We cannot think clear when we do not eat well, we do not have energy, we cannot simply enjoy life any longer because our head is focused on counting calories or portions. Now this is what I call a real torture. The only diet that I encourage is the assumed and the corect one that we love and we have in our routine.

I love to eat and there is no myth that food is part of real joys in life. As a proof, all the important events are gathered around the table, from weddings, romantic dinners, to barbecue with friends or picnic with family. And as much as I love to eat, that much I enjoy cooking all the good staff given by the nature. I can have a pleasant looking still eating whatever I desire and it is great that I can be in control, but I only succeeded this after I rethought my eating plan and when I started to eat clean every day, not only for a week.
