De ce avem buzunare la un sacou? Pentru că telefonul, cheile sau alte lucruri pe care le avem cu noi trebuie să fie puse undeva. De ce pantofii au talpa groasă? Ca să ne protejeze picioarele, să nu le rănim când călcăm pe pietre, sticlă sau teren accidentat. De ce purtăm ciorapi? Dincolo de faptul că alungesc piciorul și îi dau un aspect mai frumos, ciorapii ne țin de cald. Și dacă tot am ajuns la subiectul ăsta cu hainele… îmi pun întrebarea: Dacă moda nu ține de țoale, totuși ea nu ar trebui să vină în completarea personalității și a necesității omului?

Fashion refers not only to the clothes themselves but to the person wearing them. Being fashionable does not mean to be in trend, but to have attitude and personality. The way you behave and you present yourself as an individual in the world should be the most in vogue, not the fact that you got your hands on the last Zara collection and you wear it like the rest of the world. And above the style of clothes that should complement our personality, they must be functional beyond anything.

Why do we have pockets on a jacket? Because the phone, keys, or other things we carry with us have to be put somewhere. Why shoes have a thick sole? In order to protect our feet, so we do not hurt them when we step on stones, glass or rough terrain. Why are we wearing tights? Beyond the fact that they make the leg look longer, the tights keep us warm. And if we did reach this topic of clothes … I ask myself: If fashion has nothing to do with fashion items, should not it come to complement the personality and the necessity of people?

Dacă îmi este frig, îmi voi alege o bluza cu mâneca lungă, nu-i așa? Aici intervine funcționalitatea modei. Dar ce te faci când industria fashion uită de nevoile reale ale noastre, ale consumatorilor ei? De ce moda nu este politically correct? Pentru că moda ignoră și acea minoritate care are nevoie de bluze cu mâneca lungă care să țină de cald, dar în același timp să aibă și găuri care să permită accesul la piele atunci când trebuie să îți faci injecția în public. Oamenii de culoare se simt ofensați că Tarte Cosmetics nu vine cu suficiente nuanțe închise la ultimul lor fond de ten. Sau asiaticii se simt jigniți că Valentino nu a folosit destule modele asiatice la show-ul de la Paris Fashion Week. Dar cum ramane cu nevoile de tip 1?

If I’m cold, I’ll choose a long-sleeved blouse, right? Here comes the fashion functionality. But what do you do when the fashion industry forgets about our real needs, the consumers needs? Why is not fashion politically correct? Because fashion also ignores the minority that needs long-sleeved blouses to keep warm, but at the same time have holes that allow access to the skin when you need to take your injection in public. African American people feel offended that Tarte Cosmetics does not come with enough dark shades on their last foundation. Or the Asians feel angry that Valentino has not used enough Asian models at the Paris Fashion Week show. But what about the type 1 needs?

Mereu a fost obsesia asta pentru politically correctness doar când vine vorba de culoare, rasă sau etnie. Dar o absență totală legat de nevoile medicale și cum se reflectă acestea în haine! Nici nu vreau să îmi imaginez câte nevoi reale nesatisfăcute de modă există în direcția asta, dar ce știu cu siguranță este că nevoile MELE nu întâlnesc funcționalitatea modei deloc. Iarna asta a fost prima cu diabet de tip 1 și trebuie să recunosc că m-am confruntat de multe ori cu acest „handicap al modei”. Eu nu pot să îmi fac injecția decât în partea din spate a brațului, iar acest lucru reprezintă o problemă când vreau să mă îmbrac cu un turtle neck peste care să pun un sacou. Si acum ce ar trebui să fac? Să mă supăr și eu pe industria modei că nu s-a gândit la probleme și nevoile mele sau să fac ceva concret în sensul ăsta?

Am petrecut ore întregi pe siteurile marilor magazine de fashion în căutarea acelor piese vestimentare care să aibă un model cu găuri sau cu fermoare în partea de sus a brațelor tocmai pentru a-mi satisface această nevoie. Rezultatul căutărilor a fost o adevărată dezamăgire. Așa că m-am revoltat în sinea mea și mi-am pus în gând că voi face ceva în legătura cu asta.

There has always been this obsession for political correctness only when it comes to color, race or ethnicity. But there is a total absence related to medical needs and how it is reflected in the clothes! I do not even want to imagine how many real needs were not satisfied in this direction, but what I know for sure is that MY needs do not meet the functionality of fashion at all. This winter was the first with type 1 diabetes and I have to admit that I have often faced this “fashion disability”. I can only inject in the back of my arm, and this is a problem when I want to wear a turtle neck over which I put a jacket. And now what should I do? Should I also be angry with the fashion industry that did not think about my problems and my needs or do something about it?

I’ve spent hours and hours on the sites of the big fashion stores looking for those items of clothing with  holes or zipper pattern on the top of the sleeves just to satisfy my medical needs. The research result was a real disappointment. So I got upset and I promised myself I was going to do something about it.

Într-un pictorial de modă fotograful Norbert Baska a realizat o serie de poze fashion cu un model care poza lângă taberele unor refugiați. Când am citit despre asta in New York Times trebuie să recunosc că mi-a stârnit reacții. Unii acuza fotograful de ignoranță socială sau batjocoră, însă eu cred că este absolut minunată idea! De ce?! Pentru că mereu asociem termenul de fashion cu ceva frumos, perfect, fără cusur. Când de fapt, hainele îi îmbracă și pe cei bolnavi, refugiați, bătrâni, etc. De ce ne ferim să punem la un loc frumusețea modei cu urâțenia lumii în care trăim? Într-adevăr, lumea modei poate fi justificată ca o evadare, însă în același timp, tot oamenii reali o folosesc. Oamenii care dorm in tabere de refugiați, copiii care își fac multiple injecții cu insulină pe zi, bătrâni uitați de rude la aziluri.

Trebuie dezbinat odată pentru totdeauna mitul cum că moda ar fi simbolul perfecțiunii și ea este impenetrabilă.  Prin asocierea unui element frumos cu un altul grotesc, se revine la realitate.

In a fashion pictorial, photographer Norbert Baska took a series of fashion pictures with a model posing beside the refugees camp. When I read about it in the New York Times, I must admit that it has triggered some reactions in me. Some people accused the photographer of social ignorance or mockery, but I think it is an absolutely wonderful idea! Why?! Because we always associate the term fashion with something beautiful, perfect, flawless. When, in fact, clothes dress the sick, the refugees, the elderly etc. Why do we refuse to put together the beauty of fashion with the ugliness of the world we are living in? Indeed, the world of fashion can be justified as an escape, but at the same time, all real people use it. People sleeping in refugee camps, children who take multiple injections of insulin per day, old people who are forgotten by relatives at foster care.

One must forever cut the myth that fashion is the symbol of perfection, and it is impenetrable. By associating a beautiful element with another grotesque one, we can return to reality.
